The Art of Being Productive

Busy Doesn’t Equal Productive. The number of hours spent performing a task does not correspond to productivity. Even if one spends a whole day at a desk, ‘working’, there still could be nothing to show for it.

Ask yourself these questions: Is the task you’re working on relevant to your objective goal? Is it something you’re doing effectively? What is the Most Effective Approach?

On our road to creating a Productive Lifestyle, we can answer all of these questions. To begin improving Productivity, making changes in one’s Environment, Mindset, and Approach are necessary. This post will show you how to get started in the right direction.

Environment:

As we progress from the COVID scenario, practically every industry appears to be becoming increasingly tethered to online protocols, forcing people into a dull and monotonous working environment.

An environment that debilitates distractions as well as promotes effective working will help you focus better on the tasks at hand. Here are some suggestions for building a productive environment.

Choose an open and light space to study

A clean space will prove to be helpful to keep your mind off unnecessary distractions. A bright place will help in keeping your eyes and mental state in an active mode. If you study in a dark, cramped, and closed environment, you will instinctively feel compelled to put your work on wait. Your eyes will be strained, and you will become tired.

Don’t focus too much on the layout, instead, work with a space that allows you to breathe and isn’t overburdened with just the essentials.

RelaxFrens

Listening to the sound of crashing waves or a babbling brook can not only help you fall asleep, but it can also help you concentrate at work. Listening to nature sounds while working can improve your mood and productivity, according to a new study.

Relaxfrens is a fantastic tool that plays soothing sounds on an endless loop. Not only that but it also lets you to mix and match your favorite sounds, allowing you to create a unique combination that suits your mood.

Mindset:

Some people prefer to work longer hours and sacrifice other elements of their lives in the process. That often comes at a price, with a higher risk of burnout and a negative influence on your wellbeing and mental health. Such impacts are not far behind even with reasonable working hours. Working On Your Mindset is necessary to avoid such drastic consequences.

Discipline and Routine

When they discover the motivation, everybody can work. What gets in the way of success is figuring out how to work productively even when you’re not motivated. Self-control and Discipline are skills that are a must in order to push oneself to be productive. Motivation is not a continuous flow, being able to move forward without it is what makes a person in control of their own goals.

This brings us to the next point, Routines.

“When people don’t have a routine or structure to their day it can cause increased stress and anxiety, as well as overwhelming feelings, lack of concentration, and focus.”-Rachel Goldman

Research has consistently shown that routines can play an important role in increasing productivity. As we continue to practice a new action, we devote less and less conscious brain activity to it, and it eventually becomes automatic. This takes out the need for motivation from the equation of getting things done.

Humans are creatures of habit. Our lazy behavior is a result of taught habits. Learning healthy behaviors such as building discipline and self-control may seem difficult but a simple approach of One Step at a Time will get you further than you think.

To explore the topic of building routines and habits in detail read ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear.

Approach:

Concentrating on a single job for an extended period of time will result in a significant reduction in your concentration and cognitive ability. After a long day, we may perceive an issue as unsolvable, but when we begin again, the same difficulty appears to be a piece of cake. Regular pauses between work periods might help to avoid this.

Research shows that taking purposeful breaks from studying to refresh your brain and body increases your energy, productivity, and ability to focus.

According to one’s demands and requirements, there are numerous ways to create a work-break cycle. The Pomodoro Technique is my personal favorite.

Plan Ahead

Make a list of the things you wish to complete ahead of time. This will provide you with additional time and ability to filter out irrelevant tasks to do in the present.

Exercise

Exercise raises your energy levels, battles fatigue, and improves general well-being. Exercise ensures proper brain function in the hippocampus region. Not only does exercise keep blood, glucose, and oxygen levels high, feeding the brain, it releases endorphins into the body giving your mood a boost. When you feel happier and energized you’re more efficient and effective at all tasks in life.

To get started, a 5-minute low-intensity workout before tasks should suffice.

Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t have a particularly productive day. Instead, redirect your efforts and put these suggestions into action. You’ll be shocked at how much more work you can get done.
